Photographic documentation of Commander John Casper of STS-62 testing the portable in-flight landing operations trainer (PILOT) onboard the Space Shuttle Columbia. PILOT was tested to verify that the simulator will help the shuttle commander and pilot maintain the highest possible level of proficiency for the end-of-mission approach and landing task on extended duration orbiter (EDO) flights by strongly reinforcing visual cues over the temporal, proprioceptive, and otolithic cues.
