Their launch day already well under way, the STS-71 flight crew pauses for lunch and a photo session in the Operations and Checkout Building. From left are Mission Specialists Gregory J. Harbaugh and Bonnie J. Dunbar; Payload Commander Dr. Ellen S. Baker; STS-71 Mission Commander Robert L. "Hoot" Gibson; Mir 19 Mission Commander Anatoly Y. Solovyev; Mir 19 Flight Engineer Nikolai M. Budarin; and STS-71 Pilot Charles J. Precourt. The crew's wakeup time was 3:32 a.m. EDT, exactly 12 hours prior to the scheduled liftoff time of 3:32 p.m. EDT. Driving their workday routine is the primary objective of the 100th U.S. human space launch: docking with the Russian Space Station Mir. Following lunch, the five U.S. astronauts and two Russian cosmonauts will receive a weather briefing prior to donning their launch/entry suits. They will then depart for Launch Pad 39A, where the Space Shuttle Atlantis is undergoing final preparations for liftoff. This will be the third launch try for STS-71; the first attempt on June 23 was scrubbed prior to external tank loading; another try the following day was halted at the T-9 minute mark. Persistent stormy weather in the central Florida area was the culprit behind both scrubs.
