Suspended in full parachute gear, astronaut Thomas D. Akers participates in emergency bailout training at the Johnson Space Center's (JSC) Weightless Environment Training Facility (WET-F). The mission specialist was joined in this exercise by astronaut Carl E. Walz, mission specialist, with the other crew members repeating the training session later in the week. The exercises included a simulated drop from the Space Shuttle using its long escape pole, deployment of a life raft and signaling of rescue help.
