Afloat in a small life raft, astronaut Carl E. Walz checks out a radio device used for signaling during bailout training at the Johnson Space Center's (JSC) Weightless Environment Training Facility (WET-F). Two SCUBA-equipped divers look on. The mission specialist was joined in this exercise by astronaut Thomas D. Akers, mission specialist, with the other crew members duplicating the training session later in the week. The exercises included a simulated drop from the Space Shuttle using its long escape pole, deployment of the raft and signaling for rescue help.
