A three hundred eighty five pound geodetic Explorer spacecraft, designated GEOS-A, was launched from Pad 17-A atop a thrust augmented improved Delta, at 1:38 PM EST today. The spacecraft contains five geodetic instrumentation systems to provide simultaneous measurements that scientists require to establish a more precise model of the Earth's gravitational field, and to map a world coordinate system relating points on, or near the surface to the common center of mass. This will be the first launch for the improved Delta second stage.
