This picture of the lunar surface was photographed from lunar orbit during the Apollo 16 lunar landing mission. Mersenius C Crater, dozens of smaller craters and several small rille features can be seen in the frame. Center point coordinates are located at 19.5 degrees south latitude and 45 degrees west longitude. While astronauts John W. Young, commander; and Charles M. Duke Jr., lunar module pilot; descended in the Apollo 16 Lunar Module (LM) "Orion" to explore the Descartes highlands landing site on the moon, astronaut Thomas K. Mattingly II, command module pilot, remained with the Command and Service Modules (CSM) "Casper" in lunar orbit.
