A NASA Dryden F/A-18 participated in the Automated Aerial Refueling (AAR) project. F/A-18 (No. 847) acted as an in-flight refueling tanker in the study to develop analytical models for an automated aerial refueling system for unmanned vehicles. A 300-gallon aerodynamic pod containing air-refueling equipment is seen beneath the fuselage. The hose and refueling basket were extended during an assessment of their dynamics on the F/A-18A.
