Churned-up mud reveals the track created by a green turtle as it trekked across an impoundment between the Banana River and the Atlantic Ocean at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The turtle’s track was spotted by wildlife specialists conducting a manatee survey by helicopter. Following the flight, the team used an airboat to venture into the mangroves in order to assist the turtle, a nesting female. She was returned to the waters of the Banana River. The endangered green turtle is one of several species found along the Florida coast. The large reptiles are known to inhabit the lagoon during the early stages of their life cycle and outside of nesting season once they become adults.
