The launch of the Mercury-Redstone 2 (MR-2) suborbital mission from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Jan. 31, 1961. Onboard the spacecraft was "Ham", a 37-pound chimpanzee. Despite an over-acceleration factor, the flight was considered to be successful. Following recovery Ham appeared to be in good physiological condition, but sometime later when he was shown the Mercury spacecraft it was visually apparent that he had no further interest in cooperating with the spaceflight program.
