Six astronauts, four flags. Raising our country's flags is another tradition we have before flying in the Soyuz spacecraft. The first French astronaut to raise the flag at Baikonur was Jean-Loup Chrétien, the last was Claudie Haigneré. The last French astronaut in space was Léopold Eyharts but he flew with the Space Shuttle from the USA. ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli who is Italian and part of our backup crew is raising the flag of Kazakhstan on the left where Baikonur cosmodrome is located. Oleg Novitsky and Fyodor Yurchikhin are raising the Russian flag with NASA Astronaut Peggy Whitson and Jack Fischer taking duties for USA.

Une autre tradition avant de partir en Soyouz : le lever de drapeau à Baïkonour. Trois nationalités différentes au sein de notre équipage, mais quatre drapeaux à hisser : l’astronaute italien de l’ESA Paolo Nespoli, qui est ma doublure pour ce vol, hisse le drapeau du Kazakhstan, où se trouve le cosmodrome. Jean-Loup Chrétien a été le premier Français à l’avoir fait ici et Claudie Haigneré la dernière (jusqu’à aujourd’hui ! ;) ). Léopold Eyharts est en fait le dernier Français en date à être allé dans l’espace, mais ayant volé avec le Space Shuttle, il n’a pas décollé de Baïkonour et n’a donc pas eu le plaisir de participer à cette tradition. Peggy et Jack Fischer lèvent la Bannière étoilée américaine pendant qu’Oleg et Fyodor Yurchihin s’occupent du drapeau russe. Et moi, de nos couleurs tricolores !
